Domaine des Jeanne has a sister business a long way north of the Luberon. In The Welsh Wind is a craft distillery on the coast of west Wales, at Tan-y-groes near Cardigan in Ceredigion, and the two share rather more than an owner.

Grain to glass in west Wales

In The Welsh Wind distils in small batches on copper pot stills, making Welsh whisky, gin, vodka and rum. The approach is grain to glass, which means the spirit is made from scratch on site rather than bought in and rebottled. In 2024 the distillery was named Drinks Producer of the Year at the Wales Food and Drink Awards.

The Cask-Aged Gin

The two businesses came together over a set of barrels. Our red wine casks travel from Oppède to Ceredigion, where a small-batch gin distilled with zesty orange, warming ginger and French tarragon is laid down to mature in them. The wood does the rest, drawing plum, black cherry and a soft tannin grip into the spirit.

The result is a gin that belongs to both places at once: Welsh craft distilling on one side, a Provençal vineyard on the other. It is very good neat, and it makes a deeper negroni than you might expect.
